FreeNAS is an award-winning (Infoworld Bossie) open source Network Attached Storage server perfect for small to medium-sized businesses and organizations. Built on the FreeBSD operating system, FreeNAS supports a wide range of protocols to support Windows, Linux, Unix and Apple systems, including CIFS, NFS, FTP, iSCSI, RSYNC, and AFP. One of the best features of FreeNAS is its small system requirements footprint – FreeNAS requires only 96 MB of system memory and only 38 MB of hard disk space to run. FreeNAS is an excellent solution to take an older PC and turn it into a NAS file server.

FreeNAS also provides data protection through software RAID 0, 1, and 5. It will support a single disk partitioned into a FreeNAS OS partition and a data partition, or will support multiple disks.

Management of FreeNAS is provided through an attractive Web management interface.
